Scotland Project Year One
We embarked on a project to learn more about another country. Scotland was chosen because of a particular student's interest, and because the language would not be a barrier to students' learning. It also seemed that Scotland would be enough like us to find things we share, and enough different from us that we could learn some new things. Here are some of the things we learned.

  • Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.
  • Scotland is about 3 times larger than New Hampshire or a little bit smaller than Maine.
  • The capital is Edinburgh.
  • Their flag is sometimes called the Cross of St. Andrew or the Saltire.
  • They have other Scottish vocabulary for some words like
burn = brook croft = cottage ben = mountain

We met some Scottish friends of a staff member. They were visiting from Edinburgh for Christmas. We made a cranberry (red beads) and popcorn (white beads) garland for them to take home. A student also shared her Scottish heritage with us - songs, toys, and many lovely books and stories.

Scotland Project Year Two
With some research work done by a volunteer grandparent, we discovered Scottish Schools Online. We contacted a school in Nethy Bridge, Inverness-shire. It was located in the Highlands of Scotland which seemed perfect since we are located in the "Highlands" of New Hampshire. Abernethy Primary School, in Nethy Bridge, is a K-6 school, or as they call it P1-P7. The student enrollment was about 70 students. Mr. Edge, Headmaster, was interested in launching a penpal project.
