Mrs. Doucette

November 2007
Each week we stress the importance of proper stretching before engaging in physical activities. A different student becomes the stretch leader each week. This not only allows me to assess their understanding, but also allows the student to take on a leadership role.

We also learn new PE vocabulary words every week that describe movements, rules, sport/game equipment, or regulation lines, etc. We learn old games and new games that incorporate the above.

We are incorporating the Presidential Physical Fitness program throughout the school year instead of just the spring months. This will give the students an opportunity to gradually improve their skills and abilities. We are presently working on shuttle run, v-sit stretch and flex-arm hang. You may want to encourage your child to do a few sit-ups and push-ups at home to prepare for these activities.

Each week I try to give the students a tip on health and fitness. One of these tips was something I learned in "Touch for Health." Before a quiz, test or even when doing homework, take a minute to cross-touch elbow to knee. It helps the two sides of the brain reconnect and improve focus. We also talked about limiting the intake of refined sugar. It not only can increase weight but it can interfere with immunity. It may give you a quick boost of energy but it also lets you down in a hurry, leaving you feeling dragged out. Fuel up on foods that offer you long lasting energy throughout the day with plenty of vitamins and minerals…don't forget to drink lots of water!
