Mrs. St. Gelais Kindergarten News 4-30-08
PBIS SPRING INCENTIVE: We just finished our PBIS Spring Incentive! The Kindergarteners earned a free popsicle which they’ll receive this Friday! Great job Kindergarten!
LANGUAGE ARTS: We’ve just started to focus on the words IS and IT. IS is called a trick word because you can not sound it out (tap it out), they just have to remember the word. IT is a phonetic word that they can tap out using two fingers. We’ll compare the two words, find them in print, and begin to spell them correctly in our writing. We are still reviewing the word THE.
WATER BOTTLES: Kindergarteners are welcome to bring in a water bottle (spill proof please) to keep at their desks or in their cubbies.
SHOW AND TELL: We’re all done Show and Tell for this year! Your children have done an excellent job showing special items, describing them to the class, telling us what’s important about them, answering questions, and receiving compliments graciously. For the rest of the year, we’ll be sharing work, ideas, drawings, journal entries, etc. that we do in class. Thanks for your help with show and tell this year!
LIBRARY: We will be visiting the Library this Friday. We never made it the day before vacation, so I returned the books that were sent in that week. Your child did not take out a new book before vacation.
ARTS AND LITERACY WEEK: We will be celebrating an Arts and Literacy week with special events each day during the week of May 12th. The theme this year is the History of Milan Schools. Specials will relate to the theme too. On Monday, Kindergarten will focus on the author Lois Ehlert. Tuesday, Jeff Warner, a folk singer will perform. Wednesday is Performance Day, we’ll get to watch various students put on plays or doing reader’s theatre. Thursday, Jeanne Lemir, an Artist in Residence will teach movement to students. Friday is reading day-we’ll enjoy reading in various ways throughout the day. It should be an exciting week! There will also be a pajama day during the week-stay tuned for the date!
PAPERS FROM MRS. DOUCETTE: Three papers are coming home today from Mrs. Doucette. One has the words to the song Old New Hampshire, which the children are trying to learn for Arts and Literacy week. Kindergarten will be singing the first verse and the refrain. If you have a chance, go over the words with them at home. Thanks! There is also a Music Lesson Survey that will really help her plan for music lessons for the summer and next fall. She’d like everyone to return them, they are not binding, just a quick survey. Thanks! There is also an order form for Spin Jammers. They are great for spinning on your hand and last year students spun them on sticks during the MVS circus.
SCIENCE FAIR: The science fair was awesome this year! We went up as a class to check out all of the projects-ask your child which projects they liked and why.
BUSY BEE: Students have a chance to earn a free pass to Storyland by doing community service projects. Mr. Backler came in and explained this great opportunity to Kindergarteners before vacation. They are very excited about this! Paperwork went home before vacation-check it out! We will be doing 2 hours of community service at school (details coming soon) to clean up MVS, work in the Kinder Garden, and plant some flowers. These hours can count towards your child’s service hours. If you need another set of papers, please let me know.
LOOKING AHEAD TO JUNE: Kindergarteners are invited to stay all day for the last week of school to help with the transition into 1st grade. The full days will be Monday, June 9th; Tuesday, June 10th; Wednesday, June 11th, and Thursday, June 12th. We are not sure if the last day of school will be Friday, June 13th or Monday, June 16th yet. I’ll let you know ASAP. For your information, the last day is spent outdoors as a whole school with music, fun, and a cookout.
KINDERGARTEN CELEBRATION: Families are invited to attend the end of the year Kindergarten Celebration on Thursday, June 12th at 1:30 in the Kindergarten room. The children will sing some of their favorite songs and awards will be given out to each student. Light refreshments (made by our class) will be served. I hope to see you there!
COMING EVENTS: v THE CHICKS ARE COMING-MAY 5TH OR MAY 6TH! v Preschool Story Time: Monday, May 5th from 12:15 - 1:15 in the MVS Library (any age child is welcome to come hear some stories, sing songs, and do a craft) v PROGRESS REPORTS will be sent home on May 5th. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Thanks! v ARBOR DAY is celebrated at MVS on May 9th. Haven Neal, a local forester (Mrs. Neal’s husband), visits each class. He teaches them about trees, helps them plant a class tree on the playground, and sends home a small tree for each child to plant in their yard. It’s best to plant right away-so mark your calendars and choose a good spot! v Incoming Kindergarten Information Night Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00 in the MVS Library. v Incoming Preschool Information Night Tuesday, May 20th at 6:00. More details coming soon!
WISH LIST: Any and all recycled items! We are talking about being Friendly to the Earth by recycling, reusing, and reducing trash. As part of this theme, we’ll be building interesting creations from trash. Be creative-if you are throwing away wrapping paper, ribbons, CD’s, or anything kids would like to build with-please send it in! As always, toilet paper tubes, tissue boxes, plastic jugs are great! Thanks!
Happy May!
Gerri St. Gelais
MVS WILL BE HOSTING A KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION NIGHT AND PARENT WORKSHOP FOR NEXT YEAR’S KINDERGARTEN PARENTS: It will consist of a Kindergarten Informational Meeting and a Kindergarten Readiness Workshop. The meeting will be held in the MVS Library on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00. Child care will be provided in the Kindergarten classroom-just RSVP to Nat Caron at 449-3306 so we know how many children to prepare for. Check out the poster on the Kindergarten door for all the details! We are posting this information in the paper also. Please spread the word if you know anyone else in Milan or Dummer with incoming Kindergarten children. Thanks!
