Mrs. D. Aube
Grade 6
students received conflict resolution instruction at a Peer Mediation
Training Conference held in the school library on Thursday January 21.
Throughout the morning students developed critical thinking and listening
skills, increased their understanding of communication, empathy and problem
solving and learned techniques that would allow them to facilitate disputes
between two peers or small peer groups. Mr. Fortier and Ms. St. Cyr helped
me coordinate this event. Grade 6 now has the responsibility of helping all
grade levels at Milan Village Elementary School receive some form of
conflict resolution instruction. These are important skills which will
hopefully be carried and used through adulthood. Students learn that
conflict is a normal part of life.
Students continue to participate in hands-on projects, games and
experiences, such as manipulating the parachute, unraveling fishing lines
and tag games called “Heads or Tails” or “Throw me the Chicken!” These
challenging and sometimes frustrating activities are meant to help build
trust, cooperation and leadership while promoting self-worth,
responsibility, respect and resilience.
