Greetings from Grade Six

3/10/08

What a week it has been!  I want to thank all the sixth graders for being so patient and flexible during our classroom down pour!  Everyone was so helpful and responsible while we temporarily moved the classroom.  They definitely showed great leadership!

Because of the snow day, we are one day behind schedule.  In math we will work on writing fractions and ratios as decimal numbers tomorrow and then next week we will focus on writing fractions and decimals as percents, comparing fractions by converting to decimal form, finding unstated information in fraction problems, capacity, and area of a triangle.

We will have a spelling test tomorrow on our Dr. Seuss spelling words.  Next week our spelling list will include some new words along with some review words.  I continue to hold sixth graders accountable for any spelling words we have had since the beginning of the year.  These words should be spelled correctly in our everyday writing.  As a whole, our spelling has definitely improved and we will continue to strive to create even better spellers.

On Monday we focused on stories by Dr. Seuss in honor of his birthday.  We discussed how his stories, even though they are silly, have very important messages.  We used Guided Reading time that day to read a Dr. Seuss book and find poetry and grammar elements as well as find the message he was trying to give.  What a fun way to learn a little more about an author!

We continue to read Bridge to Terabithia, we are almost finished.  We have two chapters left to read!  We will finish reading the book next week, answer some chapter questions, talk about the five story elements in this novel, and take an end of book test.  Junior Great Books will begin again after that is completed.

In grammar we are using the comma rules we worked on last week to combine sentences.  Everyone seems to be doing quite well.  I am even seeing what we learn in grammar carry over into our everyday writing!! Bravo!!

We continue to plug along at Science Fair.  Our rough drafts are coming along nicely.  By the end of next week, we need to start preparing signs, titles and labels for our display boards.  We will also start to design graphs, charts or other pictures to place on the boards.  Please feel free to take pictures of experiments to place on the boards as well.  Experiments should be done in the next couple of weeks.  Science Fair will be here before you know it!

Here are some important dates to remember:  March 9 is daylight savings, remember to spring your clocks ahead.  The Milan district meeting will be held on March 10 and the Dummer district meeting will be held on March 11.  March 12 will be a half day for students; dismissal will be at 12:30 that day.  Skiing/snowboarding begins this week and will be every Friday in March (3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28).

That’s all for now, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.  Thank you!

Mrs. Goulet
