The 6th grade went on an overnight fieldtrip to Mitzpah Hut. Mitzpah Hut is one of the huts owned by the AMC.  The purpose of the fieldtrip was to compare Mitzpah Hut’s sewage and water system to Gorham’s sewage and water system.  The 6th grade was learning about the water system. They had taken a fieldtrip to Gorham’s purification plant and sewage treatment plant earlier in the year.

The 6th grade also learned about the importance of staying on the trail when hiking. They learned that if you go off the trail you harm vegetation and wild life. If you harm the vegetation, someone hiking after you might not be able to enjoy it as you had. The 6th grade also learned about pack in- pack out. This means everything you hike up with; you have to hike down with. This is important because someone might think they could just throw garbage in the woods.

The 6th Grade was split up into groups that they would hike with and sleep with. The groups would hike up each at their own pace. On the trail some groups played games, like camouflage, to learn about why animals camouflage themselves and other things about wildlife. Some groups had time to hike to the summit of the mountain. After dinner, the groups made a skit each about the importance of pack in – pack out and staying on the trail.
